Haus des Meeres
Haydnhaus

Haus des Meeres
This large aquarium and reptile house is housed in a former flak tower in Esterhazy Park. There is a multi-storey tropical house built on the outside of the flak tower with wooden walkways and rope bridges, small waterfalls, ponds and tropical vegetation. You will find water tanks with fish and turtles, many tropical birds and marmosets moving freely among the visitors. There is a reptile house with snakes, lizards, frogs, giant spiders and crocodiles. The highlights in this area are the albino python and its friend, which are enormous and a massive Chinese giant salamander. On the ground floor is a shark aquarium with reef sharks. This is a good place to visit if you are travelling with children.

Haydn spent the last 12 years of his life in this house and died here on 31 May 1809. During his time here he composed The Creation and The Seasons. To mark the 200th anniversary of his death there has been a redesign. The focus is on the last years of the composer’s life as well as the political and social setting of the day. The garden has been reconstructed and is now accessible to visitors for the first time.
