VIENNA — Southern Vienna

Favoriten found in Southern Vienna is the most populated district. It is a working class area. Another district found here is Simmering which is similar to Favoriten and contains a huge cemetery.

The sights found here are:
Reumannplatz
Böhmische Prater
Favoriten Water Tower
Zentralfriedhof
Gasometer

Reumannplatz
This is a large square in the centre of Favoriten and here you will find Tichy one of Vienna’s best ice cream shops. Also on the square is the Amalienbad which is a bath-house with a solarium and various other treatment rooms. It was built in the 1920’s and is worth a look inside to its indoor pool with its colourful mosaics and tiles.

Böhmische Prater
This small amusement park is found near Reumannplatz. It is very old fashioned compared to newer amusement parks today.

Favoriten Water Tower
This water tower is found near Triester Strasse which is the main road south from the city. It was built in 1889 and is all that is left of the pumping station that was built on the site. It is very colourful with its yellow and red-brick facade and the turrets on the top. Near here is Weinerberg which was once a brickworks but is now a rather overgrown public park.

Zentralfriedhof
This is one of Europe’s largest cemeteries containing over 2.5 million graves. You will find the graves of some of Vienna’s famous composers including Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schöberg and Strauss. There is also a monument to Mozart but his body was actually buried in an unmarked grave in St Marker Friedhof. There are three gates into the cemetery and you will find an information centre and map at gate 2.

Traveller's Tip

Not far from the cemetery is the Namenlosen Friedhof or Cemetery of the Nameless. This is where the unclaimed bodies that are washed up on the shores of the Danube get buried. This cemetery featured in the 1995 movie Before Sunrise which starred Ethan Hawke.
Gasometer

Gasometer
This is the name given to four huge round gas containers found in Simmering. They supplied gas to the city from 1899 to 1969 before being made into a complex of apartments, student hostel, event hall, cinema and shopping complex. They are quite a sight with their yellow and brown brickwork and arched windows.
