COPENHAGEN — Vestegnen

This is a surburban district that is found to the west of Copenhagen city. There isn’t much for tourists in this area apart from a few interesting museums if you have the time.

Kroppedal
This museum has a permanent exhibition about Danish astronomy as well as special exhibits about other subjects.

The Viking Village

The Viking Village
This village is found in Albertslund, just outside Copenhagen. Here you will find three small houses and a farmhouse. The farmhouse is magnificently decorated with hand carved objects and textiles.

Traveller's Tip

Be aware that the houses are only open at certain times but you can walk around the village without an appointment.

Heerup Museum
This museum is devoted to the works of Danish painter, sculptor and graphic artist, Henry Heerup. This artist used many mediums in his art especially recycled materials. The museum houses a collection of his paintings but also many of his personal items including his tools, music, books, gifts from other artists amongst others.

Damhus Tivoli
This is a traditional fairground-style amusement park found in the outlying suburb of Rødovre. Here you will find dodgems, video game arcades and merry-go-rounds amongst other rides. There is a minature golf attraction as well as a restaurant and pub. It is probably more suited to younger children as there are none of the faster rides associated with these types of parks. You can reach the fairground by bus or by train.

Vestvolden

Vestvolden
This was part of the city’s fortifications during the 19th century and some of the cannon bunkers used at the time can still be seen today. It was built between 1888 and 1892 and it is around 13 kilometres long. It surrounds the western part of the city of Copenhagen and stretches from Køge in the south to Utterslev Mose in the north. Today it is one of the longest and best preserved military constructions of its age and is quite an engineering feat as its construction was done mostly by manual labour. It is now a nature reserve and you can walk or ride a bike along it.

Filmbyen
This is a film studio complex found in Hvidovre. It was once a military base but it now houses film-related companies and many films and TV shows have been filmed here. It was founded by Lars von Trier and Peter Aalbæk Jenses through their company, Zentropa in 1997.

The Circus Museum
This unusual museum contains over 100,000 circus-related items. There are facilities for circus workshops and performances. One Sunday every month there is a free circus school that anyone who is interested can attend. The museum is found in Avedørelejren in an old army barracks. It is fully interactive so if you have ever wondered what it would be like to be a circus performer you can do so here.

The Medieval Village

The Medieval Village
This is a living history museum with a reconstructed village of 7 houses that look just like they would have in the 13th century. There are also several worshops and activities for children to participate in. It is found in Brøndby and you can take Bus 135 or 166 from Brøndby Strand Station to the Ulsøparken stop.

Arken Museum of Modern Art
The building housing this art museum resembles a large ship. One of the highlights of its collection is the Damien Hirst room which contains ten works by this famous artist. The permanent collection, contains around 300 works of art and focuses on the post-war period, especially the period after 1990.

Traveller's Tip

When you are here make sure you visit the cafe where you have the most fantastic view over the water. If it is a hot day bring your swimming costume so you can cool off in nearby Køge Bay.
Ishøj Dyrepark

Ishøj Dyrepark
If you are staying near here this is a great place to visit for a bit of green space. Here you will find grazing deer, Scottish highland cattle as well as goats and sheep.

Thorsbro Waterworks

Thorsbro Waterworks
This is an industrial museum displaying the history of the beautiful building of this former waterworks. The museum contains machinery that was used in the waterworks including an 80 year old diesel engine that still works. The museum is open only on Sunday afternoons in the summer.

Greve Museum
This museum is housed in old farm buildings. The permanent exhibitions deal with rural life in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. There are collections of costumes, paintings, and furniture. The grounds are well worth a visit and there is a cafe on site.There are special activities for children.

Hedeland

Hedeland
This is a former gravel pit that has been converted into a huge recreation park. There are lots of activities here including a 10-kilometre ride on a vintage railway, a ski hill for all seasons, an amphitheatre holding regular outdoor concerts, a golf course, a riding area and a go kart track.
