Schloss Blutenburg

The castle situated about 11km northwest of the Old Town was built in 1425 by Albrecht 111 for hunting and pleasure. Blutenburg is a moated castle situated between two branches of the River Wurm and is an example of late Gothic architecture. There are lovely gardens designed by Teutsch. Since 1983 it has been the home of the International Youth Library and which is the largest of its type in the world with over 500,000 children’s books.

Munchener Tierpark Hellabrunn

Münchener Tierpark Hellabrunn
This is the oldest Geo-Zoo in the world and is divided into continents according to the Geo-Zoo concept which results in 15 park areas in an area of 36 hectares. It is more of a nature preserve than a traditional zoo and is inhabited by animals that live in especially large, structured enclosures, including elephants, giraffes and rhinos. It is found about 6 km south of the centre of Munich and it can be reached by the underground or bus no 52.

Traveller's Tip

In the summer of 2010 there will be a new polar bear enclosure where the polar bears can be seen swimming in the water.

Bavaria Filmstadt
This is an often overlooked attraction that is found in the southern suburb of Geiselgasteig. Here you can see sets used in pictures that were filmed here such as Enemy Mine, Cabaret, the Never Ending Story as well as German TV series. Other attractions include a 3-D cinema with motion-simulated seats and stunt shows. It is found around 14km from the Old Town and can be reached by underground to Silberhornstrasse and then tram no 25 to Bavariafilmplatz.
