Greece offers a multitiude of experiences for both the well travelled visitor and those who are new to travelling. There are the magical Greek islands to relax in and explore as well as the vibrant capital of Athens. Greece was once considered a cheap destination for travellers but since the 2004 Olympics the country and especially its capital Athens, has undergone a transformation and it now boasts an efficient transport system and large modern hotels. Modern Greece can trace its roots back to the ancient Greek civilisation which is generally considered to be the ‘Cradle of Western Civilisation’. It is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, major scientific and mathematical principles as well as the beginnings of Western theatre. The modern Greek state was established in 1830 following the Greek War of Independence. Greece borders with the countries of Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey. It has a huge coastline which features over a thousand islands with only a small number of these inhabited (around 227). These islands are some of the most visited tourist attractions in the world.
